One of the major influences in Juan García Ponce’s literature was the work of the Austrian writer Robert Musil. Not only the extensive fragmentary novel Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (1930 - 1943, The man without qualities) but also two stories collected in the volume Vereinigungen (1911, Unions) left traces in the texts of the Mexican. The present work interprets the two short novels by García Ponce El libro (1972) and Unión (1974) in connection with, above all, one of these short stories by Musil: “Die Vollendung der Liebe” (“The Realization of Love”). García Ponce took up, primarily, the idea of the constitution of the identity of the ego through the contact with other human beings. However, in the period between the production of Musil and García Ponce, the constituent center of the ego’s identity shifts. Musil’s –and his contemporaries’– psychological concept of a deeply internally organized consciousness is contrasted with another, a phenomenological one, in which the center of the subjects’ identity is situated in the spaces between them, outside the subject.
